This site serves the Rainier Beach community in South Seattle at the recently built state of the art Rainier Beach Community Centerlocated on the northwest corner of Rainier Ave S and Henderson st.

Accessible by Metro Transit routes 7, 9, 38, 105, 106 and Sound Transit Link light trail (5 blocks west of the center).

Free Renewable Energy STEM Workshops for Seattle students

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) and the Associated Recreation Council are proud to announce free Renewable Energy STEM Workshops in partnership with Verizon Foundation. During the 2017 winter quarter, Rainier Community Center and Rainier Beach Community Center RecTech labs will each host two 12-week workshops for middle school students.

Workshop participants will use science and technology to explore, experiment and discover alternative energy sources including wind, solar and hydro power. Each workshop will meet once a week for an hour and a half, and at the end of the workshop students will take home their own hydro-powered toy car.

The workshops are free and open to all middle school students interested in exploring the world of alternative energy through STEM-based learning. The workshop options are:

Rainier Beach RecTech Lab, 6th-8th grade
Wednesdays, January 18-April 5, 3-4:30 p.m.
Or
Fridays, January 20-April 7, 3-4:30 p.m.

Each workshop has space for 10 participants. Registration begins January 3 and space is limited. To enroll, call or stop by the community center. Create your own digital works of art! Use the computer to design your own animations, create a paint editor tool, and learn how technology is used in the art world!
Students will learn how to use Scratch to explore their creativity.

Tuesdays | 3:30 p.m – 4:30 pm
Create your own video games! Design and program your own games using code and computer science. Learn important gaming concepts while building racing games, mazes, and other fun games.
Bring your friends. No previous computer experience necessary. Have your friends join too – The CS First Game Design club is social and fun!

Rainier Beach RecTech offers open public access and classes for youth, adults, and seniors. Classes and workshops for adults include job search and cover letter help, help with applying for utility subsidization and housing, smart phones and basic computer skills, Photoshop and Basic Web classes, and low-cost one-on-one computer training by appointment.

We offer a teen digital media internship that is paid through the Seattle Youth Employment Program, which gives teens the opportunity to earn while they learn.  Homework Help is available after school as well as varying workshops & classes plus a FREE tax preparation program.
